This semester has been an opportunity for forays in into a new material of glass. Initially I contacted the glass department as I hoped to cast a melted effect glass smiley but this idea was tricky to find the process to do so. Laura the glass technician suggested a sand cast smiley as an alternative. Sandcasting has been an ideal opportunity for experimentation and as a none glass maker it encouraged me to explore its potential without much knowledge of outcome which was freeing.
I love how the process itself mimics archaeological process in that the image is created through digging directly into the sand using small excavation tools to draw. Once the hot glass is poured into the shape and sufficiantly hardened, the object is then excavated out of the sand.
